ELAINE WOOTEN FOWLER (Age 95)
Elaine Wooten Fowler passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2009 at her residence in Fairfax, Virginia. Beloved wife of the late Gordon Fowler. Loving mother of Gordon Fowler and fiance Carol Carmody, Terry F. Fiumi (Fabrizio) and Eric Fowler (Sandy). Elaine is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Elaine worked at the Folger Shakespeare Library from 1955 to 1971 as the head of reading room services and associate editor of publications. From 1971 until her retirement in 1983, Mrs. Fowler worked as a freelance writer and as a research associate for Louis B. Wright, a trustee of the National Geographic Society and the former Folger library director. With Wright, Mrs. Fowler was the author and editor of several books about William Shakespeare and early American history. She was the sole author in 1965 of "English Sea Power in the Early Tudor Period, 1485 to 1558" and worked as a consultant on film projects, including a 1978 National Geographic series on Shakespeare.
Elaine Wootten Hayward was a New York City native and 1935 graduate of Wellesley College. In 1938, she married Navy Officer Gordon Fowler. The couple settled in the Washington area in the mid-1950s.
A visitation will be held Saturday, January 2, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia. A funeral service will be held at Ft. Myer Chapel, Arlington, Virginia on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Arlington National Cemetery.
