MARSHALL DILLON TALBOTT, JR.

Marshall D. Talbott, Jr., a retired Army Lt. Colonel who served with the Organization Joint Chiefs of Staff, died May 23, 2010 of complications from Parkinson's Disease. He was a resident of Springfield, Virginia.

Marshall was born February 5, 1928 in Jersey City, New Jersey to Marshall Dillon Talbott, Sr. and Gladys Early Talbott and raised in Pickaway, Monroe County, West Virginia. He graduated from White Sulfur Springs High School and spent two years at Virginia Tech before receiving his appointment to West Point. He entered the Academy with the Class of 1950.
Marshall began his Army career as an artillery officer on the same day that he and Marion were married. Their first home was at Fort Hood, Texas, where Marshall was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division and later Baumholder, Germany. After tours of duty at Ft. Bliss, Texas; Ft. Campbell, Kentucky; and Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, Marshall continued his studies for two years at the University of Virginia where he entered the field of nuclear physics. This led to an assignment with the Defense Atomic Support Agency. After four years, he was sent to Vietnam. Upon return, he attended the Command and General Staff College. From 1965 to 1967, he served on the staff of the Office, Chief Research and Development. From 1967 to 1970, he served with the Organization Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1970, he retired as a Lt. Colonel from the Army.

After his retirement from the military, Marshall became a real estate investor/developer in West Virginia. He also founded a chain of gas stations in West Virginia. He was quite active in community affairs. He was a volunteer for The National Archives and Patient Representative Office at DeWitt Army Hospital. He worked for the Virginia State Board of Elections and ushered at the Fort Belvoir Post Chapel. Ever interested in scientific research, he participated for 23 years in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging conducted by The National Institute on Aging and The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Marshall was an avid sportsman, having been a handball champion while in the Army, he visited the Pentagon Officers' Athletic Center two or three times a week after he retired. He played Northern Virginia Senior Softball and enjoyed golf. He also enjoyed, and was enjoyed by, his grandchildren as he attended their sports activities.

On May 23rd, Marshall died at his residence at Greenspring Village where he and Marion had resided since 2007. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marion O'Hara Talbott; two daughters, Patricia T. Reed (Tom) of Fairfax Station, Virginia and Stephanie T. Fleming (Drew) of Severna Park, Maryland; five grandchildren, Meghan, Ashley, Wrightly and Carrrington Reed and Hannah Fleming; a sister, Virginia Walkup (LG) of Rock Hill, South Carolina and a brother, William J. Talbott (Dorothy) of Lewisburg, West Virginia.

Services will be held at the Old Chapel, Ft. Myer, Virginia, 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2010, followed by burial with Full Military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. A visitation will be held for family and friends at the Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia, on Thursday, May 27, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, Inc., 1501 N.W. 9th Avenue/Bob Hope Road, Miami, Florida 33136-1494.
